FRANKFORT, KY — OVU student Revel Lewis IV has been awarded a $1,000 Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) Dream Scholarship. He was among 22 top students who received the award to encourage the pursuit of law enforcement/public safety careers by the professional public safety officers of LEEP.

Lewis graduated with a 3.82 GPA from Walnut Hill Christian Academy. He plans to use his LEEP Dream Scholarship at Ohio Valley University where he will pursue a degree in criminal justice (law enforcement) and Bible studies. “Rusty has turned into an outstanding young man with the assistance of his parents, the Boy Scouts of America, his public service work to his community and through his faith in God,” said Ill Chris L. Stout, Lexington Scottish Rite Personal Representative. “Rusty served with a Police Explorer troop … where he assisted in several charitable events and with security work such as for parade detail, traffic direction and parking.”

A member of Frankfort Law Enforcement Explorers Post 2, Lewis was District 6 Representative with Kentucky Junior Historical Society; Eagle with four Palms and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scouts of America (BSA), received National Ranking in Competitive Powerlifting; and is a Rolling Hills Bible Junior Camp Counselor. He received BSA Arrow of Light and Order of the Arrow awards; was involved in Churches of Christ for Scouting; took first and third place in Salt River Men’s Fellowship Preaching Contest; took first place in Debate Team, Preaching and Bible Bowl Team and Best Overall Debater in Lads to Leaders; and BSA – Explorers Program awards for first place team in Bomb Threat and Active Shooter, first place in Unknown Call, High Risk Warrant and High Risk Stop. He was also awarded Outstanding Kentuckian, Kentucky Admiral, and Kentucky Colonel by the state government.

Lewis volunteered with Kentucky Historical Society and Kentucky State University Research Farm and Reforest Frankfort. “Mr. Lewis is quick to help out when something needs to be done, never makes excuses and has a consistently positive attitude,” wrote Dr. Brian Jones, Assistant Professor at Georgetown College. “Mr. Lewis carries himself with a degree of maturity and has a range of knowledge that one would not expect for someone his age. I would guess this is the result of an intrinsically honorable character combined with an excellent upbringing.”

Other scholarship winners include: Steven Carlton of Alabama; Lena Illig of Alaska; Kyle Hartsuck of Arizona; Erin Daly of Connecticut; Delaney Henderson of Florida; Faruq Lawal of Georgia; Austin Leggett of Illinois; Samantha Newby of Indiana; Erik Vokoun of Kentucky; Mason Averill, Blake Erickson, Ryan Ferguson, Jacob King, Jenna Klokkert, Austin Lynema and Victoria Gunst of Michigan; Alexis Hower of Nebraska; Philip Grella of New York; Evan Guin of Tennessee; Rankin DeRonde of Texas; and Michaela MacDonald of Wisconsin.

In its 12th year, LEEP has awarded some $162,000 in Dream scholarships to students showing a demonstrated interest in public service/law enforcement careers. The non-profit public safety group’s scholarship program is made possible by a growing list of national supporters.
